Contemporary Non-Surgical Endodontic Treatment: What Works & What Doesn't

Endodontic treatment has been very successful in retaining natural tooth that is otherwise lost. However, the best instrument alone will not guarantee treatment success without a solid treatment rationale based on the eradication of the endodontic micro-organisms. 

Periapical lesions are caused by the complex interaction between the micro-organisms and the host defense, which results in bone resorption. Removal of the causative agents will result in radiographically visible healing. Long-term success is underpinned by prevention of leakage and timely placement of an appropriate permanent restoration. 

The so-called endodontic triad are the root canal preparation, disinfection and obturation. In these three areas, specifically technology has made great strides, including the use of the operating microscope, electronic apex locators, nickel-titanium rotary instruments and warm gutta percha obturation. This course aims to get interested clinicians up to speed with the latest in endodontic technologies. 

Dr. Ove Peters is a co-Chair and program director at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco. He received his postgraduate education in endodontics at the University of Zurich and at UCSF and is as a Diplomate of the AAE. He is currently on sabbatical at the UQ School of Dentistry in Brisbane. 

Dr. Peters has published more than 150 manuscripts and abstracts related to endodontic technology and biology. He has received the Hans Genet Award of the European Society of Endodontology and more recently the Louis I. Grossman Award of the American Association of Endodontists.
