Part Two: Management and treatment planning of post-treatment endodontic disease can be a dilemma for clinicians. Modern orthograde retreatment have very predictable and positive outcomes. Therefore, it is often 'the' treatment of choice for managing post-treatment endodontic disease. Traditionally, surgical treatment was often viewed as the last heroic attempt at tooth retention and was considered only when orthograde retreatment was simply not possible or practical.

Endodontic microsurgery has however evolved tremendously in the last decade and is fundamentally different from traditional apical surgery. There are now many clinical studies supporting the predictable and positive outcome of modern endodontic microsurgery in the management of post-treatment endodontic disease.  Hence surgical treatment of post-treatment endodontic disease should no longer be viewed as the last resort.

About Dr Marcus Yan

Dr Marcus Yan completed his Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree from University of Sydney in 1994. After four years of general dentistry in NSW, Marcus completed a Master of Dental Science degree in Endodontics from University of Queensland and a fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (RACDS) in 2001. In 2008, Marcus was admitted as a member of the RACDS in the specialist field of Endodontics. Marcus is also a fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy and was recently admitted as a fellow of The International College of Dentists. 

Marcus has published papers in Australian Endodontic Journal and Annals of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons.

Marcus was the past president of the Australian Society of Endodontology (NSW) in 2007/2008. He is the current councillor member (Australia) of Asian Pacific Endodontic Confederation, a member of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Endodontists, an associate member of the American Association of Endodontists. Marcus has been regularly involved with Continuing Education in Dentistry at the University of Sydney since 2002.  

Marcus was also a captain of the Royal Australian Army Reserve of the Dental Corps and had participated as a visiting lecturer at the University of Sydney. In 2015, Marcus was appointed as the Guest Professor for the Master Endodontics program at the International University, Cambodia. In 2017, Marcus is appointed as the Senior Lecture in Endodontics at the University of Queensland.

Marcus lectures both nationally and internationally. He has particular interests in rotary instrumentation and surgical endodontics. Marcus is one of the two principals of Sydney Endodontists. Outside of endodontics Marcus enjoys badminton, running marathons and spending time with his family.
