Prosthodontically related Pulpitis and Restorability of teeth

Dr Hezel-Barnett Cohen

B.Ch.D (Stell), Cert. Pros. (Kings), DCD Pros (Melb)

Prosthodontic treatment may cause pulpitis. What causes pulpitis during the course of treatment and what do we tell our patients?
Assessing the restorability of a tooth is important, because this will determine if the tooth can be saved or not. The restorability of a tooth is assessed from a prosthodontic, endodontic and periodontic point of view. Prosthodontic restorability indexes are available, but are they of any value? Risk assessment of the patient, oral cavity and specific site/tooth needs to be addressed as well.

Dr Hezel Cohen completed his Bachelor of Dental Surgery at the University of Stellenbosch in the beautiful wine country of the Western Cape Province, South Africa. Upon graduation in 2001 he was awarded the South African Prosthodontic Society's Gold Medal for outstanding work in Prosthodontics. In 2008 he moved to Australia with his wife and two Jack Russells and settled in Gladstone on the East Coast. After completing the Australian Dental Council Examination, the family moved to Roma, Queensland. In 2013 he began working with Prosthodontist Dr Vladimir (Bob) Hotinski at Concept Dental in Perth. During this time he completed a Certificate in Restorative Dentistry (Prosthodontics) through the Kings College in London and in 2017 he commenced his specialist training in Prosthodontics at the University of Melbourne. After completing his Doctor in Clinical Dentistry degree in 2019 he joined Dr Bradley Shepherd at Western Prosthodontic Centre. He is passionate about dentistry, photography and competing in ultra-endurance events and has completed several ultra-marathons, including the Glasshouse 100 in Queensland.
